The Essential Toolbox

You don’t need tons of fancy tools to get stuff done around they house, if you just have a few of the basics you can get a ton done!

Of course there are tools that make certain jobs easier, and over time you will most probably collect more and more, but if you are starting out this is my list of what I think are the essentials.

Hammer

Specifically, a claw hammer.

This lets you hammer in nails, and pull them out when you mess up.

Can also be used to bend things that are straight, and flatten things that aren’t flat.

Shifting Spanner

In a lot of applications this can replace a full set of spanners. Can also be used as a hammer, especially when whatever you are trying to loosen doesn’t move.

Pliers

You can normally get a set of 3 pairs of pliers relatively inexpensively.

Combinations pliers (the big ones): General purpose, more heavy duty.

Long nose pliers: For more delicate work, like twisting wires.

Side cutters: For cutting wire and cables.

Screwdrivers

A basic 6 piece is set is perfect and will get you buy in most situations.

Flat screwdrivers are also good for opening paint cans, just try not use them as chisels, as tempting as it may be.

Allen Keys

A ton of flat-pack furniture requires an Allen key. Most of the time they come with one, but often they are bad quality and will quickly round on the edges.

You will also often need one to loosen or tighten grub screws on taps or fittings.

Box Cutter/Utility Knife

Useful for opening boxes (duh), as well as packaging, cutting tape, removing silicone…you get the point.

Scissors

You might have some at home already, but a set in your toolbox is helpful when you need them.

Hand Fixing Tool (Hilti)

This is probably the easiest way to hang pictures on a wall, just make sure that you keep the tool steady against the wall, and try be as accurate as possible with your hammer.

Note: This doesn’t work as well directly into brick.

Spirit Level

If you are going to hang pictures, you going to need to make sure they are level!

Tape Measure

Measure twice, cut once, that's the rule! A tape measure is essential for any handyman (or woman).

Tape and Cable Ties

Masking tape is great to tape off areas when painting.

Electrical take is essential for any electrical work.

Any cable ties are super useful. Get various sizes are these.

A Toolbox

You need something to put all your tools in!

If you don't have a lot of space, pick something big enough for your tools, but small enough to fit in the back of a cupboard.
